A side-scrolling action-adventure set on the planet Zebes, where bounty hunter Samus Aran searches a maze-like world for upgrades that open new paths. The game rewards backtracking and exploration rather than a fixed level order, a structure later nicknamed 'Metroidvania.' A late-game reveal that Samus is a woman was notable for its time.
