Samus Aran descends into the underground tunnels of planet SR388 with orders to exterminate the Metroid species at its source. Unlike the original Metroid, progress is tracked by a Metroid counter rather than pure exploration, giving each area a clear objective. It introduced several Metroid life-cycle forms later referenced throughout the series.
